Frequently Asked Questions

Where is The Ghost Light located?

The Ghost Light is tucked beneath the historic Millwald Theatre in downtown Wytheville. To find us, look for the stairwell in the alley just beyond the marquee. You’ll descend into a hallway lined with vintage playbills — follow the whispers and you’ll know when you’ve arrived.

Is there a sign or entrance from Main Street?

No signage, no fanfare. The Ghost Light is meant to be discovered, not advertised. Entry is through the alley — just follow the light.

How do I get in?

At the end of the hallway, you’ll find a large portrait of Mary Alexander. Behind her watchful gaze is the entrance. If you’ve received the password and the light is glowing, you’re in the right place.

Is the space accessible?

The Ghost Light is a historic space with a modern spirit. For guests with mobility needs, accessible entry is available via the Millwald’s main entrance and elevator — just let a staff member know you’re here for the Ghost Light, and we’ll take care of the rest.

When is The Ghost Light open?

We open for select performances at the Millwald, offering a pre-show experience unlike any other. We also host Ghost Light-only evenings — mysterious, intimate affairs for those on our list. Join the newsletter to stay in the know.

Can I make a reservation?

Not exactly. The Ghost Light is not a place you book — it’s a place you’re invited. Access is reserved for donors of the Millwald Theatre at the Orchestra Society Level and above, or for those holding a Ghost Light ticket on select evenings when the mainstage comes to life. If you know, you’ll know.

Is there a dress code?

Nothing theatrical, but let’s say… you’ll feel most at home in something you’d wear to be seen — or not seen — in the right kind of light.

Not-So-Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Mary Alexander, really?

A name in the program. A face in a frame. A starlet who was scheduled to perform just once — before the orchestra pit was bricked over and silent films took her spotlight. Some say she still waits for her cue. Others say she never existed at all.

Why the teacups?

In the 1920s, bourbon in a teacup meant survival. Now, it means style. It’s our quiet nod to rebellion — refined, of course.

What happens if I say the wrong password?

You might get a polite smile. Or silence. Or a raised eyebrow. Either way, you’ll need to know the magic words to step behind the portrait.

Is the ghost light always on?

Only when it needs to be. Traditionally, a ghost light was left burning on stage to ward off spirits. We leave ours on to attract the right ones.

Can I take pictures inside?

You can try. But cameras don’t capture what happens here — only stories do. And even those tend to blur around the edges.

What if I find a key?

Hold onto it. You never know when it might fit something.
